Earlier this week I had the lovely opportunity to join a group of ladies who volunteer several times a year to donate, cook for and serve a meal to the residents of the Samaritan House in Fort Worth. I imagine we had all spent much of the day preparing the food, as I had, and were looking forward to having the residents (who are all HIV positive and homeless, according to their website) enjoy their meal. As this was my first experience with the group, I helped transport food from kitchen to serving line, watching the flurry of activity as the announcement was made to ‘come and get it’. Within under half an hour, all were served, many coming back for seconds and thirds, with the satisfied and grateful smiles which show true appreciation. Our jobs were done. We ate a little of the remaining meal, cleaned up, packed up and went back home.
On the way back home the conversaton somehow turned to the politics involved in corporate America, and which professions typically were more guilty than others by involving too much political play to be healthy. I was reminded that I knew of one company, at least, which does not resort to political advantage in order to rise to the top. It was begun to truly help others along the path of life and to cheer each other on… ahd has today become one of the most respected of business models. So much so, that it is touted in the school of business of several well-known universities. If you’d like to find out more about the company and about the ladies who enjoy helping others by cooking and serving — you might be surprised where we come from. Just follow these links:

Remember the old saying “You’ll catch more flies with honey….?” There was a lot being said there — not just that having a sweet disposition would help you get ahead a lot faster in life, but there was a lot being said for the bee, as well. Especially the Queen Bee. Well, tomorrow is the anniversary of the Queen Bee’s birthday! And “the buzz” is that what she created is still spreading honey all over town.
As the story goes, the bumblebee shouldn’t be able to fly — and if it couldn’t fly, it wouldn’t be able to pollenate, make honey, or …. well, you get the idea. Think about the shape of the bumbleebee. With its round body and tiny, weblike wings, it doesn’t look like it should ever be able to get off the ground. But not only does it fly, it supports life in many forms, making life better for the lives of those it touches (just don’t get stung!).
If you have not had a taste of the nectar and want to see what all the buzz is about, just follow the link and give me a call to find out more! Click here!

Hello, World! It’s not the most conspicuous change ever made, I’m sure. From MarieFergusonDowntown.com to MarieFerguson.com. But it means a lot to be able to use your own name as your URL instead of someone who lives in Wisconsin. Today I feel the freedom of not being required to have an area attached to my online name to distinguish me from someone so far away. Sure, it’s great to live downtown, but it is very nice to just be me… so here goes. Free at last!
Some decisions are made for us, whether by the hand of God or ‘by accident’ (if anything ever really is an accident). As we start to get older, wiser, more mature — and start to look it as well as feel it —- we finally admit that we must take action rather than allowing nature to do to us what it did to our mothers. First, there are those smile lines — you know the ones! Take a look in the mirror every morning and see how they start to multiply, as if by magic! Then one day you spy the first gray hair. You begin to look at yourself in a new light. Or maybe it’s because you need more light to see yourself at all! Then you have to get a new mirror with a huge magnification to get your makeup on correctly. That’s strange, because it used to go on so easily before the wrinkles started setting in, and you admit to yourself that you’d better do something fast!
Just a couple of years ago I got an email from my college roommate. She had attached a picture of herself and her sons standing in front of the Christmas tree. I can’t believe her kids are adults now, and in the email she wrote, “I am old and fat!” It was only a couple of years ago, but I started to notice the changes in myself right after that. It was then I that knew I’d better do something about it. I knew surgery was not the answer — after all, how often do people joke about how many facelifts Jerry Jones has had? So it had to be something longer-lasting and less expensive. I had to start taking better care of my skin. Little did I know that the solution to my skin problems would also offer such opportunity for friendship, fun and the chance to help others. Now I can be me, and feel better about doing it! Can you guess how? Follow the link to find out! Click here
